About CARE's Work:
In Africa and Around the World

Our History In the Horn of Africa

As the drought and food crisis in the Horn of Africa continues, more than 13 million people are struggling to survive. CARE is providing lifesaving humanitarian assistance to women, children and the elderly in Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia. But humanitarian aid, such as water, food, medical care, shelter and help regaining lost livelihoods, is still desperately needed.

Though the Horn of Africa has experienced a rainy season this fall, the rains have led to increased disease outbreaks especially within the Dadaab refugee complex. Roughly 500,000 people are living in the Dadaab refugee camps making the outbreaks of waterborne diseases such as malaria, cholera and dengue fever even more contagious.

CARE has worked in Dadaab since 1992, where we provide primary education and water, distribute food and offer psychological support and counseling, particularly to women and girls. More than 1,600 refugee aid workers have assisted CARE in implementing programs, many of them having lived in the camps for most of their lives.
