Snapshot of the Worst Crisis in the World Today:
The Horn of Africa Famine
Famine has been officially declared in six regions of Somalia, with the likelihood that famine will spread into additional areas of southern Somalia. Somalia aid is desperately needed. The declaration of the famine confirms that the food crisis in the Horn of Africa is the worst humanitarian emergency in the world today, and there is little likelihood of improvement until 2012.
Our illustration shows the severity of the drought and famine in Africa, which is affecting people in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti. Please help CARE continue to carry out our lifesaving and life-changing work in the Horn of Africa — including providing relief for Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia — and other poor regions of the world!
By making a gift to CARE, you can help support our African relief efforts that are helping to save lives, maintain our peacekeeping work in Kenya and Ethiopia, assist people enduring the causes and consequences of the Somalia famine — and so much more.
Currently, 13.3 million people are in need of immediate humanitarian assistance across Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti, and 750,000 of them are at risk of starvation. Help is desperately needed today in Africa and around the world.
One of CARE's strengths, in both long-term development and emergency response, lies in our deep roots and connections in the communities where we carry out programming. More than 90 percent of our 11,000 staff members are from the countries where they work — that helps us develop close ties to the community. At the Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya, more than 1,600 refugees work alongside CARE staff to help Somalis by distributing food baskets and other essential items to the camp’s new arrivals. We have worked effectively in the Horn of Africa for more than 20 years, where we are heralded as a trusted partner.
