Celebrate International Women's Day

Pledge Your Support to Stop Violence Against Women

At least 1 out of every 3 women around the world has been beaten, raped, or abused in her lifetime.

Violence against women not only destroys women's lives, it harms families and communities, and undermines efforts to reduce global poverty.

It doesn't have to be that way. You can help women and girls escape violence and poverty.

One billion women will be victims of violence in their lifetime.

Marie-Claire, a 50 year-old woman from Alunguli Village in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo is one.

Her nightmare began when a rebel group attacked her village. Four men took turns raping her and her children. Then they abducted her daughter. Marie-Claire's daughter returned home two years later, but with two children fathered by a rebel.

"We're trying to pick up the pieces," says Marie-Claire. She's lost her house and has to provide for all her children and grandchildren.

But Marie-Claire has hope. She's now a beneficiary of CARE's Wakinamama credit savings and loans program. Thanks to this program, she can afford school fees again, and she's regaining strength.

"I am starting to move on, I've been able to talk to other women about my experiences and I am starting to feel better. My desire is to have a house, buy a cow, and to make sure that my children and grandchildren go to school. It's not too much to ask, is it?"

Today you can help women like Marie-Claire rebuild their lives.

Commemorate International Women's Day by pledging your support to help women and girls access the resources they need to escape violence and poverty.

CARE's Work to Stop Violence against Women and Girls

CARE works with communities, governments and local groups around the world to prevent and address violence against women and girls. We are currently implementing projects that are explicitly focused on reducing gender-based violence in more than 20 countries. We also have dozens more projects that include efforts to tackle violence against women as a critical component.

For example, providing access to counseling services, support, and care through women's savings and loans groups, has proven to be an effective way of educating women of their rights and helping them find the support they need to overcome violence and poverty.

In addition to these programs, CARE also works to influence laws and policies to better protect and empower women. Currently, we are advocating to pass the International Violence Against Women Act of 2010 (IVAW), a landmark legislation that would, for the first time, create a comprehensive strategy to address violence against women and girls, and to integrate prevention and response measures across U.S. foreign assistance programs.

Why Give to CARE?

CARE is one of the world's largest international humanitarian organizations.

We place special focus on working alongside poor women and girls because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty.

CARE provides training and resources to help women start their own businesses. Help girls get an education. Help women access the resources they need to grow their own crops and feed their families. And help millions of pregnant women and infants receive maternal and child health services so they can stay healthy and strong.

Last year, we supported more than 800 poverty-fighting projects in 72 countries to reach more than 59 million people. Learn more about CARE's work.

Charity Navigator, America's premier independent charity evaluator, rates CARE as an exceptional, four-star charity.

The need for your support is so great. According to the United Nations, acts of violence cause more death and disability among women aged 15–44, than cancer, malaria, traffic accidents and war combined. Your gift to CARE can save lives. Please consider making a donation now.
