I am writing as a supporter of CARE and a West Virginian to ask that you vote to support international family planning amendments during the mark up of the FY2018 State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill.

Every 90 seconds, a woman dies from a pregnancy-related complication, while 220 million women around the world who would like to time and space their pregnancies do not have access to modern contraceptive methods. Meeting this unmet need for contraception would reduce maternal deaths by 30 percent, and save the lives of 1.6 million children under the age of five every year. Providing women access to voluntary family planning services saves lives.

As the Senate Appropriations Committee Marks up the FY2018 State and Foreign Operations (SFOPs) Appropriations Bill, I urge you to support the bipartisan amendments that will provide women and girls around the world the tools they need to lead healthy, productive lives. Please stand up for continued U.S. support for international family planning programs.
