BREAKING NEWS: The Trump administration just announced that it's ending foreign assistance programs in the Central American countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras.

The current levels of violence and suffering in the Northern Triangle of Central America will only worsen if development and humanitarian assistance is withdrawn. The Trump administration's latest budget cuts would further restrict access to food, water, and shelter for millions of people.

Now more than ever, Congress must demonstrate strong bipartisan support for aid to Central America. But they won't stand up for lifesaving accounts unless they hear from you.

The White House has proposed a 24 percent cut to critical foreign assistance programs for the Fiscal Year 2020 and proposed cutting all assistance to Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador as they face significant humanitarian needs. Such cuts would disproportionately affect the world's most vulnerable communities, which is why I'm calling on you to reject any cuts to these lifesaving accounts.
 
I am deeply opposed to cuts to these important programs that save millions of lives, represent the face of America abroad and help to promote a safer world. Lifesaving foreign assistance funding represents roughly one percent of the federal budget -- just one cent of the federal budget dollar -- and it is critical to the U.S. being a reliable partner and leader in the world.
 
These low-cost programs save millions of lives every year, address the root causes of poverty, decrease dependency and build stronger, more resilient societies. Beyond saving countless lives, our own nation's security is benefited by alleviating suffering and decreasing poverty to create a more stable and prosperous world. That is why I support an overall foreign assistance budget of $59.1 billion, on par with recent funding levels, in order to preserve these critical programs. 
 
Foreign aid saves lives -- and right now, it's time to save foreign aid. I call on Congress to speak out against foreign assistance cuts to Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, and to protect foreign assistance funding in all budget negotiations. Congress must  pass a budget in FY2020 that protects lives, supports our national security and maintains our nation's leadership in the world.
