Manju’s story is not unique — millions of women in Bihar, India find themselves in labor, bleeding and in peril, with little access to health services or ambulances. Despite the dire circumstances, Manju’s daughter was born without any complications. But not all are so lucky.

Every 90 seconds, a woman dies from a pregnancy-related complication. U.S. investments in global health, largely funded by foreign assistance, are crucial to ending preventable child and maternal deaths, stopping the spread and frequency of disease, and strengthening health systems within the country to provide quality health care to every community.

Congress has the power to protect these lifesaving programs and they need to do that now. But they won't stand up for lifesaving accounts unless they hear from you.

The White House continues to propose deep cuts to critical foreign assistance programs. Such cuts -- and even lesser cuts -- would disproportionately affect the world's most vulnerable communities. 
 
I am deeply opposed to cuts to these important programs that save millions of lives, represent the face of America abroad and help to promote a safer world. Lifesaving foreign assistance funding represents roughly one percent of the federal budget -- just one cent of the federal budget dollar -- and they are critical to U.S. leadership in the world.
 
These low-cost programs save millions of lives every year, address the root causes of poverty, decrease dependency and build stronger, more resilient societies. Beyond saving countless lives, our own nation's security is benefited by alleviating suffering and decreasing poverty to create a more stable and prosperous world. That is why I support an overall foreign assistance budget of $59.1 billion, on par with recent funding levels, in order to preserve these critical programs. 
 
Foreign aid saves lives -- and right now, it's time to save foreign aid. I call on Congress to protect foreign assistance funding in all budget negotiations and to pass a budget that protects lives, supports our national security and maintains our nation's leadership in the world.
