Protect U.S. foreign assistance from cuts

821 million people around the world do not have enough food to eat. And in times of hunger, women and girls are often the last to eat.

While delivering emergency food aid is essential, particularly for people impacted by violence or climate change, we have the ability to end widespread hunger by teaching women, families, communities, and countries to become self-reliant and independent.

Tell Congress to oppose any cuts to U.S. foreign assistance in 2019 and pass a budget that promotes global food security.

The White House's budget proposal for the coming fiscal year included plans for deep cuts to critical foreign assistance programs. These cuts -- and even lesser cuts -- would disproportionately affect the world's most vulnerable communities and hinder efforts to end global hunger.

More than 821 million people worldwide do not have enough food to eat, and about three million children under the age of five die from malnutrition each year. U.S.-funded programs work to empower women, help local farmers, and provide adequate nutrition to vulnerable people. These programs are the key to achieving global food security by helping people withstand environmental, climatic, and economic shocks.

For these reasons, I am deeply opposed to cutting foreign assistance programs that save millions of lives, represent the face of America abroad and help to promote a safer world. Lifesaving foreign assistance funding represents only one percent of the federal budget -- just one cent of the federal budget dollar -- and they are critical to U.S. leadership in the world.

That is why I support a foreign assistance budget of $59.1 billion, on par with current funding levels, in order to preserve these critical programs.

Foreign aid saves lives -- and right now, it's time to save foreign aid. I call on Congress to protect foreign assistance funding in all budget negotiations and to pass a budget that protects lives, promotes global food security and maintains our nation's leadership in the world.
