A crucial spending bill that determines funding for lifesaving foreign assistance programs is coming to the floor of the House of Representatives for a vote by members of Congress.

Thanks to our advocacy, Congress has pushed back against the most extreme, life-threatening budget cuts – but we need to protect every dollar we can to save lives around the world, including the 76 million people who will require emergency food assistance in 2018.

I am joining with CARE advocates to urge you to protect America's foreign assistance budget, and to call on you to oppose any amendments that would impose cuts to the State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill for FY19. There has never been a more crucial time for our country to reaffirm its commitment to provide relief and reduce poverty around the world through foreign assistance. Nearly 124 million people require emergency food aid in 2018, as people in Nigeria, South Sudan and Yemen continue to face the potential for famine conditions - leaving women and girls uniquely vulnerable. Much of this need is conflict-driven as we responded to the largest cholera outbreak in history in Yemen and ever-increasing needs of now nearly 69 million displaced people and refugees.

Protecting this spending bill from cuts will save millions of lives, not only through immediate relief assistance, but also by allowing communities to stand on their own through sustainable maternal health care, economic development, education and so much more.

Foreign aid saves lives -- and right now, it's time to save foreign aid. I call on Congress to protect foreign assistance funding from any cuts and to pass a FY19 State and Foreign Operations Appropriations Bill that saves lives, builds sustainable development, supports our national security and maintains our country's leadership in the world.
