From the earliest days of our history, America has championed the rights of immigrants and those fleeing violence and persecution to find safety on our shores. It is the common thread in our shared identity and values.

Right now, the Trump Administration's executive order on refugees is putting our commitment to these values to the test. We must not fail. We are better than this ban. And we must speak up now.

We urge our legislators in Congress to speak out unequivocally in support of refugee families. #BetterThanTheBan

I'm joining CARE Action advocates in calling on you to continue to strengthen our country's commitment to better assist, protect and empower refugees and displaced families who are fleeing their homes in search of safety.

President Trump's executive order is a direct affront to our nation's commitment to humanitarian leadership. For more than 65 million displaced individuals around the world, we must not back down from America's role in supporting refugees to build a just and secure future.

We must support -- not restrict -- the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, end the suspension on the resettlement program and lift any measures to discriminate against refugee families by nationality or religion. We are better than this ban.

We must continue to resettle the most vulnerable individuals based solely on need, and push the Administration to increase the number of refugees resettled in the U.S. each year. These programs should use the very effective, current screening standards and focus on the most vulnerable who are often women, children, elderly and disabled.

For those who risk everything to build a new life in our country, we must respond with compassion and support, instead of fear and intolerance. This is a founding premise of this country, and I count on you to speak out immediately in support of all refugee families.
