Dear Friend,
I want to share with you the story of a 9-year-old Ethiopian girl named Tino. After her sister died in childbirth, Tino’s family forced her to inherit her dead sister’s marriage and child. Her brother-in-law, and now husband, is 26 years her senior.
Like 60 million other daughters forced to marry before the age of 18, Tino’s chances for reaching her full potential are greatly diminished. She must care for a baby while she is very much a child herself. Instead of going to school to get her education, Tino cooks meals and tends to the needs of her new family.
Early marriage cuts short the dreams of a better life for girls like Tino. Those who marry before the age of 18 are at a higher risk of dying during pregnancy or delivery, dropping out of school and enduring domestic violence. CARE needs your help to bring an end to this harmful tradition and its tragic consequences.
If child marriage continues at its current rate, an additional 100 million girls will become child brides within the coming decade — that’s 25,000 girls every day. CARE is working in places like Ethiopia to reduce the prevalence of child marriage, but more must be done to help families and communities bring an end to this harmful practice.
By making a tax-deductible gift today, you will play a critical role in helping CARE fight the causes and consequences of poverty, including child marriage.
With your support, we can help women and girls around the world fight poverty and create a brighter, healthier future for all.
Sincerely,
Helene D. Gayle, MD, MPH
