A severe food crisis is unfolding in the Sahel of Africa — a large region stretching from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Red Sea in the east — that demands our immediate attention.
We've seen the warning signs before and they cannot be ignored: drought, failed crops, dying livestock, soaring food prices and the influx of displaced people desperate for relief. The signs of this crisis are even more alarming among children who are not getting enough to eat.
With 13 million people at risk of hunger and 1 million children facing severe malnutrition, we must respond now to the critical need for food and assistance in the Sahel. The governments of Niger, Chad and Mali all have declared disaster and appealed for international help. You can help today by supporting CARE's hunger- and poverty-fighting work in the Sahel and poor countries around the world.
By making a gift today, you'll give hope to people like Assamaou Rabi. Assamaou and her husband participate in CARE's cash-for-work program in Niger. They earn money by clearing weeds on pasture land and seeding it with grass for cattle to graze, thus ensuring other families don’t lose their herds and livelihoods. CARE's program helps Assamaou afford the rising cost of food, and she can stay home to care for her 7-month-old child, Zainab. Without CARE's program, she and her husband would be forced to trek the long, dangerous journey to find food and work elsewhere.
“Some families are already down to just one meal a day of watered-down millet porridge," said Johannes Schoors, CARE's Country Director in Niger. "In a normal year, the hunger season doesn't start until April or May, but this year, it has already started. Adding to the problem, the worst-hit regions are scattered on the map. There are pockets of severely affected people, which make it difficult and costly to reach them."
CARE is on the ground launching cash-for-work programs for families, training nurses to recognize and respond to cases of malnutrition, and helping communities strengthen cereal banks and plant vegetable gardens, but we need to scale up our efforts if we are to help prevent the crisis from affecting more people. Will you support CARE's lifesaving and life-changing work in the Sahel and around the world? Your gift of $70 can provide six months of nutrition for a child or expecting mother.
CARE has a long history of delivering emergency aid and a proven track record of knowing what must be done during crises like this one. But the situation in the Sahel is growing more serious every day. The longer we wait, the more lives will be at risk. Please give as much as you can afford today to help poor families like Assamaou’s survive — and thrive — in the face of extreme poverty and disaster.
Thank you for supporting CARE and helping people around the world build a brighter future for all.
Sincerely,

Helene D. Gayle, MD, MPH
President and CEO, CARE
